Gageego!

The Gageego! ensemble was founded in 1995 in Gothenburg, Sweden, and since then it has been working with untiring dedication and passion on behalf of contemporary music. Already the name of the ensemble suggests the approach: it alludes to the legend of the very first carefully and after profound effort pronounced (no, exclaimed!) human word – GAGEEGO! Laconically, the same story describes that the answer (the second word…) was not long in coming – what? And while the story as a whole is a light-hearted depiction of the importance of language and music for the deep human need to communicate, it also highlights the extent to which Gageego! is willing to go to expand listening, challenging and enchanting its audience in the process. Through virtuosity and devotion, yes, but throughout these almost 30 years, there has been a constant curiosity and joy in allowing the audience to be embraced and surprised by the most diverse musical expressions.

The precision of modern classics from the 60s to the 80s has clearly defined Gageego’s music, but just as common is how the musicians, like chameleons, swap their instruments for boxes, surgical instruments, drills and strangely constructed inventions. Gageego!’s concert series at the Gothenburg Concert Hall has featured newly written music from all continents in various but regularly recurring guises. Gageego! is also a regular guest at concerts both nationally and internationally, and over the years there have been a number of releases on Swedish and foreign record labels.

Concert | Gageego! ensemble mosaik Mark Tatlow Elena Gabbrielli Klaus Lang Christy du Preez the Kalv Choir

A musical journey and festival come to an end. The 20th anniversary is over, and we take part in music that echoes through several centuries.

We arrive at the old church with peace signs collected from nature. Is there any hope left?

The earth gives up its spirit and returns to its creator. A sudden thunderstorm and even an earthquake; for a moment all hell breaks loose. An ancient melody dissolves the ensuing silence. Then a song of a morning star is heard…
