The Kalv Festival remembers Luigi Nono!

The 20th anniversary of the Kalv festival is almost ready to reveal its full program. A program where four days of festival will hopefully be experienced as one long walk between concerts, sound installations, performances and conversations. The village of Kalv and its beautiful lake envelop the sounding and the listening. 2024 is the Year of the Wandering Sounds of Kalv.

Our anniversary coincides with the centenary of the birth of the composer Luigi Nono, which we celebrate with two major concerts. Nono’s string quartet Fragmente – Stille, An Diotima is performed by German ensemble mosaik and Das Atmende Klarsein is performed in a version for bass flute and electronics by Italian flutist Elena Gabbrielli and Johan Svensson on electronics.

Italian composer Luigi Nono’s motto was what he came to read on a monastery wall in Toledo: “Wanderers, there are no roads, only wandering!”. The music of his later life revolved around open forms, wandering sounds and space. The string quartet Fragmente – Stille, An Diotima is, according to many, the portal work in which the music of the late Nono took its first explicit form.

Stillness and silences are common throughout Nono’s music, but they are intense and composed with precision and sensitivity. In the late 1980s Luigi Nono wrote the following: “The pause in Cage originates in Asian thought—’empty’ and ‘full’. For me, however, silence—the musical pause—is truly intensive. One lives in it as if at a crossing-point. One remains silent there, one realizes that one needs to be alert towards all directions.

During the Kalv Festival 2024, Nono will be one of our wanderers, and we hope that you, dear audience, will walk with us!

In 2024, the Kalv Festival will take place for the 20th time. We rejoice and marvel at this achievement and invite you all to celebrate it with us this summer, 8–11 August!
